There are abandoned houses in the Los Angeles area. It’s naive to think otherwise; every city has them.
Recently, Instagrammer @urbex_therapy posted video exploring what they dubbed “Abandoned 1940s Elderly Artist’s Home”.
It’s so sad. Even though the house is empty, you can see that the artist who lived there loved their home and put time and effort into making it special.
@urbex_therapy didn’t indicate who the artist was or where the house is. That is probably for the best, since houses like this are all too vulnerable to vandals and squatters. I’d hate to have some lowlife break in to steal the vintage light fixtures.
I also couldn’t tell you exactly why it’s empty or how long it’s been empty. When there is an elderly homeowner, there’s always the possibility that they may die. They may move into senior housing. It may or may not be clear who is legally responsible for the house, especially if they have no close family or an heir can’t be located. (If you own a home, be sure to set up an estate plan and specify who is inheriting or responsible for selling your house/townhome/condo/loft so it doesn’t sit empty for years after you’re gone.)
Many of Altadena’s displaced residents are looking for vintage homes to restore. Wouldn’t it be lovely if this abandoned house sold to one of them?
