When I started digging into chronically empty buildings in early 2023, I found local officials basically unhelpful and useless (they are all more than welcome to prove me wrong), so I started digging on my own.
Part of the problem is that no one really knows how inaccurate the vacancy rate really is. I started mapping empty and misused properties with the city’s abatement list and other public data (news and reader tips as well) but there’s no official list of empty or misused properties and city officials were completely unhelpful when I started making inquiries two years ago.
I think the question is “what are WE going to do about it” because we know the answer to the question as written…
Yep. They DGAF, no matter how much they pretend to.
Amen!
What is the empty inventory in LA? We need the stats to lobby the electeds.

So this is where I believe we need to start. I will call my councilmember to discuss the tracking of empty housing. We know they track vacants.
As they should!
Los Angeles needs a mayor like Winston Churchill since Karen Bass is now the next Neville Chamberlain
